A Christmas Favorite

Stella got some musical instruments for Christmas. One of her favorite toys Christmas morning quickly became the antelope sliding whistle. She thought it was so funny! (You pull its front legs in and out to make a weird noise.)

Pouty Player

Stella got three games for Christmas: Goodnight Moon, Cootie, and a matching Princess game. We played the matching game with my mom and Michael. The picture above was when Stella had to wait for everyone else to take their turn. Overall, she had fun. I think Michael had the most fun being amazed by Stella's Princess knowledge...she knows them ALL and the princes. For the "Stella" version - we kept the cards flipped over:

I Will Not Be a Short-Order Cook

If your kid has a food allergy or medical conditions that cause a specific diet…this blog posting is NOT for you!

I've waited and waited for Krista to write about this one on her own blog (http://trainofthought-krista.blogspot.com/), but I'm waiting no longer. So the idea was hers, but now she'll have to deal with the fact that I'm writing about the topic first. Sorry Kidd.

Feeding your children is more difficult than it sounds. There are so many choices to make…breast milk or formula, when to start solid foods, organic or not, homemade or not, etc. I will admit that we were more cautious with Stella than Charlotte. For example, I would buy more organic items and didn't introduce many sugary things. For me, I found that to be more expensive and time consuming and I worried constantly about what I provided while she was at home since she also ate at daycare. Although they have guidelines they have to follow, the food isn't always what I would consider to be the healthiest and I tried to make up for it at home. We became more relaxed over time. Would I do it differently if I had all of the time and money in the world…probably. But due to our lifestyle, I've learned not to worry so much about it. We're not the family that shops solely at Trader Joes or Whole Foods, but we're also not the family that eats out each night. We make an effort to cook most dinners at home served with a fruit and veggie. (Some of my friends are stay-at-home moms and they make their own baby food, etc. I don't make fun of them…I commend them. It takes DEDICATION!) We are still considered "strict" by some – Stella gets maybe 1-2 juice boxes a week as a special treat.

When Stella started eating table foods Krista shared some of the best advice with me…"Don't be a short-order cook!" She was always telling me that whatever I did with Stella (from bedtime routine, to feeding, etc.) be prepared to do the same with any number of kids Andy and I had. So if I didn't want to make 4 separate dinners for 4 separate kids, begin with Stella by making her eat what we eat. It made complete sense to me.

And it worked for quite awhile. Then life got crazy…we added another kid to the routine, no one seems to ever be healthy, activities in the evening seem to make dinner planning difficult, one of us would work late, blah, blah, blah. Making her a PB&J and veggie straws during the "witching hour" after work while she screamed she was HUNGRY was so much easier than making her wait until "our" dinner was ready an hour later. It really got "bad" during the holidays…who wants to cook during all of the festivities? Not me. So there were a lot of nights of the "basics" – grilled cheese, waffles, cereal, and lunch meat.

I also found myself making Stella a separate meal when I "knew" she wouldn't like what we were having – taco soup, eggs, fish, etc. But then a revelation occurred. I watched Krista's kids on a Friday night in early December. She said she was making chicken chili for dinner. On my way there I wondered what the kids would eat. Chicken chili. Josie hesitated, but ate an entire bowl of it. That was my wake-up call. Krista had followed her own advice, but I had veered off of the path. I had been going the "easy" route for a couple of months. However, I'm not helping Stella (and now Charlotte) by not putting new foods in front of them.

So as of this week, I'm back on track. I recently asked the pediatrician how much Stella needed to eat during the day…just in case she revolts at dinner. The doctor said she needs to have one full meal. She definitely gets that and more. Am I going to make something "new" every night that she may not like? No. I'm not that mean! BUT I'm not going to add grilled cheese and PB&Js and McD's happy meals to our normal dinner rotation for 2010. Stella has actually been confused lately when I give her grilled cheese for dinner (a weekend lunch favorite)…she's asked, "Is it lunch?" with a quizzical look on her face.

I've also found that what "they" say is true. If we eat as a family, Stella & Charlotte eat more. And if Stella helps prepare her plate, she eats more. She's been helping a lot in the kitchen over the last week due to our Learning Tower gift and she hasn't complained as much during dinner about what was served.

How am I going to stay back on track? One way is that I plan to use my crock-pot more in 2010. I just came upon this website: http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/ where a woman challenged herself in 2008 to make a crock-pot recipe everyday. I figure with 365 recipes, 4-5 of them have got to be good. I also had another friend tell me that every night before dinner her mom put a veggie or fruit tray on the kitchen table. If you were hungry before dinner, you could eat off of the tray.

But most of all, I'm just going to try harder. Being a parent isn't supposed to be easy…even when food is involved. What do you feed your kids?

Bigger Big-Girl Bed

For one of Stella's Christmas gifts from us she got some princess pillows and a princess blanket for her bed. Christmas night we moved her from her mattress on the floor to an actual bed frame. It makes her quite high off of the ground! She LOVES it. She calls it her bigger-girl bed. However, she is very disappointed that Charlotte is not moving into her room yet. We told Stella that Charlotte is not big enough yet. First thing this morning Stella asked (again) "Is Charlotte big enough girl yet to sleep with me?" Probably not for another 8 months or so since we moved Stella to a bed when she was 18 months...I wouldn't do it any sooner.

Santa Came to the Wades!

Santa brought the girls toys with wheels this year! Charlotte smiled a lot and LOVED her car. She is constantly trying to get in it when it is in view...and she doesn't care what is in her way when she's trying to get in it...including the tree which almost came down Christmas morning. Stella was hesitant about the tricycle. I think she was confused because she thought Santa was still at our house...she looked around for him. (Took her awhile to warm up to him Christmas Eve at my grandma's.) We kept telling her that Santa brought her gifts and she didn't understand that he came and left our house before she woke up. Since then, she has been more enthusiastic about the bike...just didn't get any joyous photos Christmas morning. Santa also brought us a family gift - a Goodnight Moon board game and the movie "Polar Express"...apparently Santa would always bring Andy's family a board game as a "family gift" and he did that for us as well!

The Learning Tower

This is a Christmas gift to the girls from Papa Kenny. Stella LOVES it. It's basically a 2-kid stool for our kitchen that won't tip over. Stella helped me "prepare" dinner tonight at the counter...she was so cute. I am very excited to use this more and more. Thanks for the idea Melanie!! It was an instant hit at our house...even when Stella realized it was a stool and not a "house" (her first guess).

Christmas Part 1 - KY Style

The first night of KY Christmas, we were given a special performance by the cousins:All of the cousins together under the tree:They all enjoyed exchanging gifts Saturday morning...the stockings from Mamaw & Pops are always a favorite:Saturday we braved the cold and wind to go downtown to "ice skate":The only one on actual skates:Santa was also downtown and NOT loved by Charlotte. I think Santa is asking Stella what to do about the situation:Stella was hesitant herself about Santa, but is also a follower...the cousins LOVED Santa and therefore, Stella did as well:Everyone in their Christmas pjs:

The Trains

We took the kids to the Museum to see the holiday trains display. At first Stella was certain that she did NOT want to go on the train ride. However, after looking at the displays for awhile and watching other kids go on the ride, she asked us if she could. Adults were too big so she was very brave and went by herself. She said it was FUN.

Christmas Program

Stella was in her daycare's Christmas program last night. It was very cute. Her class sang "Jingle Bells" while shaking bells. Charlotte had a good time watching the kids perform.

Grocery Carts...the new joy

I took these a few weeks ago when we all ran to Best Buy together. Stella LOVES grocery carts that are toy-like. She enjoyed "driving" this one around and didn't even mind that Charlotte was along for the ride.

The Movies

Stella & I were invited by a friend to go to the movies yesterday to see "The Princess and the Frog". I was sure she would sit through the movie, but wasn't sure about the darkness and and the volume. She did great! The very first thing on the screen (before the previews and the movie) was a HUGE scary eye and lightning and it was extremely loud - when they are trying to show you how cool the theater surround sound is...so that freaked her out, she screamed and jumped into my lap. She stayed in my lap for the previews, but quickly went back to her own seat (to be near Anna!) once the movie began. Partially through the movie she whispered "mom" and when I looked down she just patted my hand...a great thank-you. She's not a fan of popcorn, but loved the juice box and cookie Meg snuck inside. She can't wait until daddy takes her to see "Toy Story 3" next!

Santa Arrived on His...

...Firetruck! Each year Santa visits our neighborhood on a Saturday arriving via a firetruck. Stella fell asleep 15 minutes before his arrival. She missed the fun but Charlotte didn't. She wouldn't look up at me or smile big, but she didn't scream!!

Baby-zilla

O Little Town of Bethlehem (Little People style) is usually so calm and peaceful...the manger, the inn, the drummer boy accessory, the sheep, etc.And then the Baby-zilla is spotted:This time the town is spared, but one of the kings is not:"Even if I have to carry him off in my mouth to crawl away faster, I will get him!!"
Another attack from Baby-zilla where the entire town was taken out:
Which is worse? The fact that she chews on Jesus? Or the fact that I get pictures as evidence??
